MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG Menier Chocolate Factory

Stephen Sondheim’s musical was reviled at its premiere in 1981 and lasted only 14 performances; but the show, much improved since then, is probably too sophisticated ever to be truly popular. The title couldn’t be more ironic. The subject is the betrayal of talent, integrity and friendship. The story is told backwards. Starting in 1980 and working its way to 1957, it traces the careers of three idealistic friends. Mark Umbers is the musician who, longing for fame and money, sells out to the movies; Jenna Russell is the lovelorn author who becomes alcoholic and sour. Damian Humbley is the lyricist and he’s the only one to retain his principles and refuse to compromise. He makes a stunning denunciation during a TV interview when he derides and humiliates his partner. Maria Friedman, a fine singer, who has worked a great deal with Sondheim, perhaps most memorably in Passion, makes her directorial debut and her production impresses. The cast looks good and there are strong performances from the three principals. The songs carry a terrific emotional punch.
