THE BODYGUARD Adelphi Theatre

The film, with Whitney Houston and Kevin Kostner, got a terrible press, which had no effect on the public whatsoever and it went on to be the second biggest box-office success in 1992. The album of the soundtrack sold 45 millions copies. Lawrence Kasdan’s turgid and dreary thriller has now been turned into a rock opera. The story and the characterisation are as thin as they always were. Thea Sharrock’s efficient large-scale production, designed by Tim Hatley and lit by Mark Henderson, is aimed at audiences who go to rock concerts, rather than musicals. Heather Headley has star quality. She looks good and she has a great voice. There is strong support from Lloyd Owen as the bodyguard and from Debbie Kurup as the singer’s jealous sister.
