AS YOU LIKE IT RSC at Round House

Rosalind, the most adorable of Shakespeare’s heroines, has always been a role classical actresses have wanted to play. The greatest Rosalinds of the 20th century were Edith Evans and Vanessa Redgrave, who made the whole theatre one Orlando. Head-over-heels in love, Rosalind (Katy Stephens), nevertheless, remains a realist and level-headed; she’s far more level-headed than love-shaken Orlando (Jonjo O’Neill) who leaves his love letters all over the place and which is one of the best visual gags in Michael Boyd’s enjoyable production. Forbes Masson’s Jaques, a professional cynic, wrapped in a camp sadness, pinches Amiens’s song and stops the show. Richard Katz’s mad-haired Touchstone has a very funny entrance in the Forest of Arden, entangled in a large ball of dead briars.
