PEOPLE, PLACES AND THINGS National Theatre/Dorfman

Duncan Macmillan writes about addiction and the good work being done by the AA to help addicts to recover. Most of the action takes place in a rehab centre and some audiences at may find his play too upsetting. Jeremy Herrin’s traverse production, which has a sharp documentary feel to it, concentrates on one particular woman, who is in denial that she has a problem. Denise Gough, as the insular and hostile addict, traces her slow journey to doubtful recovery, in an amazing performance. On stage all the time, the role is emotionally draining and visibly takes its toll on her. Gough is given valuable support by Barbara Marten and Nathaniel Martello-White.
