LA MUSICA Young Vic

There was a time in the 1960s and 1970s when Marguerite Duras’s intellectual plays were all the rage in France. English audiences tended to be bored stiff by them. In this her one-act two-hander Emily Barclay and Sam Troughton, cast as a couple about to divorce, are discovered on a platform which is reached by a hydraulic lift. He wonders why they didn’t kill each other. Good question. In the second part the audience has to move their chairs and sit and stand in a circle. The actors then join them and mingle. It probably sounds better in French. Quel ennui.
